The World of Beauty in the Value System of Adolescents

Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze the value system of young people – second-grade students with different educational profiles from the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. The selection of participants was based on a stratified random proportional sampling method. The research was used to determine the hierarchy of values among youth, to estimate the importance of the world-of-beauty value and to identify the main socio-cultural, familial, and educational factors shaping the axiological system of adolescents. The study employed the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS) developed by Milton Rokeach, in the Polish adaptation by Agnieszka Jaworska, Anna Matczak, and Joanna Bitner (2011). The analysis showed that among terminal values, young people attach much importance to intrapersonal and interpersonal values (family security, health, true friendship, and self-respect). Of the instrumental values, the highest-ranked were affection, loyalty, and honesty – values in the category of moral values. The value “world of beauty” occupies the last position in the hierarchy of values constructed by the youth.
