Cued Speech and Other Means of Communication Used by People With Hearing Impairments in the Perception of Participants of Online Course on the Cued Speech Method

Abstract

The aim of the study was to examine the level of knowledge and opinions of participants in the Cued Speech Method (Metoda Fonogestów) course regarding communication among individuals with hearing impairments, with particular emphasis on its Polish adaptation. The research was conducted using a survey method with an author-designed online questionnaire completed by 164 participants. The analysis of results indicated that most respondents possessed basic theoretical knowledge of Cued Speech, although they often perceived it through stereotypes associated with sign language. The vast majority of course participants expressed a positive attitude toward the method, recognizing its potential in supporting communication, spoken language acquisition, and speechreading. Respondents emphasized the need for broader integration of Cued Speech into the training of teachers, speech therapists, and special educators. The authors recommend conducting comparative studies after the completion of the course to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching Cued Speech as well as potential changes in the perception of communication methods used by deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.
