The Importance of Support in Preparing Minors in Rehabilitation Center to Experience Independence

Abstract

This article addresses the importance of support provided by educators in youth care centers for the development of independence in their residents. The study was conducted using a diagnostic survey method, using proprietary questionnaires, among a group of 505 minors aged 13-18. These youth were housed in 12 randomly selected youth rehabilitation centers (MOWs) in three Polish voivodeships between 2017 and 2018. The results revealed that educational support and the minors’ assessment of its effectiveness influence the development of independence in their residents. Current supportive interventions undertaken by youth rehabilitation center staff have little impact and, in the minors’ opinion, are ineffective in developing their independence. Rehabilitation educators pay too little attention to providing youth with the conditions to become independent or motivating them to engage in independent activities. The lack of a statistically significant effect of educational support on the independence of minors outside the center also shows that the staff of the youth detention centers do not establish relationships with the minors based on trust, bonds, and care, and their influence is limited to the facility where they work.
