General Pedagogy in the Light of Selected Textbooks from the Interwar Period

Abstract

The article is devoted to presenting the subject of general pedagogy in the light of selected textbooks on pedagogy published during the interwar period. It presents: definitions of general pedagogy and its research subjects, disciplines cooperating with pedagogy, as well as the content and categories used to describe this subdiscipline. Reflections on these topics are preceded by remarks concerning the biographies of the authors of the analyzed textbooks. The analysis of the textbooks shows that their authors understood general pedagogy as a theory of education concerning the goals, means, methods, and principles of implementing the educational process. They treated theory as essential knowledge for educational practice.
