Education in the Face of Information Overload: Developing Critical Thinking in a World Full of Fake News and Half-Truths

Abstract

The dynamic development of digital technologies and the increasing availability of information lead to the phenomenon of information overload, which significantly affects the way contemporary humans function. An excess of content of varied quality and reliability, including fake news, manipulation, and content generated by artificial intelligence, increases the risk of cognitive disorientation and susceptibility to influence. In this situation, developing critical thinking skills, which enable the analysis, verification, and selection of information, becomes of key importance. The article addresses the issue of preparing pupils and students to function in an informational reality, highlighting the role of education in shaping the ability to assess the credibility of sources and formulate well-founded opinions. Attention is drawn to research findings indicating the level of these competencies among young people, which makes the development of critical thinking one of the key challenges of contemporary education. The aim of the article is to outline the problem of developing critical thinking in children and future teachers of preschool education and early school education.
