Teachers’ Competences in Collaboration with Parents: A Theoretical Model and Implications for Teacher Education

Abstract

The article addresses teacher–parent collaboration as a key professional competence essential for effective educational practice and student well-being. Drawing on a critical review of pedagogical, psychological, and educational literature, the author proposes a theoretical model integrating cognitive, instrumental, and socio-emotional components. This model combines Bloom’s revised taxonomy with the framework of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), capturing competence development as a dynamic, spiral process – from reactive to reflective-critical levels. The study highlights the significance of collaboration with parents in the context of the school’s declining authority and growing tensions in teacher–parent relations, while outlining implications for teacher education. The proposed model offers a comprehensive and progressive framework for preparing future teachers as reflective practitioners, capable of engaging in genuine partnership with parents and strengthening the school’s social capital.
