Family Religious Education in the Opinion of Adults Undergoing a Crisis of Faith

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe and evaluate religious education in the family from the perspective of adults undergoing a religious crisis. The research is based on several case studies, for which in-depth interviews were conducted with five individuals who claimed to be undergoing a crisis of faith. The perspective of adults in religious crisis helped to delve deeper in those factors of faith education which, depending on their quality, can either be helpful in the face of emerging crises of faith or may even contribute to their formation. The elements that were identified by the respondents as valuable in religious upbringing in the family were also identified as helpful in experiencing a crisis of faith in adulthood. On the other hand, elements of upbringing that were mostly lacking in religious upbringing were identified by the respondents as desirable in overcoming faith crises, such as an in-depth conversation on religious topics and the demonstration of a personal relationship with God.
