Thanatological Education in the Digital Age

Abstract

The article addresses the issue of thanatological education of children and adolescents considering contemporary psychosocial challenges and functioning in the digital era. The analysis is based on statistical data and institutional reports indicating the scale of boundary experiences, such as the death of close relatives, bereavement, and suicidal behaviors among young people. These experiences constitute an important element of psychosocial development while revealing deficits in systemic educational support in this area. The article emphasizes the need to conceptualize thanatological education as both a systemic and non-systemic task, with particular focus on schools and digital environments as potential venues of support. It discusses the opportunities and limitations of mediated communication and virtual forms of memorialization, highlighting their significance in coping with loss and in building supportive communities. The conclusions point to the need for professionalizing thanatological education, integrating digital tools with real relational support, and maintaining ethical sensitivity in working with the boundary experiences of young people.
