Placement in a Youth Detention Center as an Experience Encouraging Change

Hubert Kupiec

Abstract

One of the most common indicators of the effectiveness of resocialization, both in theory and practice, is the behavioral changes observed in socially maladjusted individuals. This article presents the results of a study designed to identify behavioral changes that minors residing in youth care centers notice in their own behavior. A diagnostic survey was used to conduct face-to-face interviews of 506 minors from 12 randomly selected facilities across the country. The results indicate that minors placed in such facilities perceive the greatest changes in their behavior toward their parents and in their functioning as students, while significantly lesser changes, though still statistically significant, are observed in their relationships with peers, as well as their manifestation of problem behaviors. However, the observed changes are mostly short-lived (they disappear after leaving the center), as they are primarily due to oversight conducted by educators and their own extracurricular pursuits.
