Herbart’s Framework of the “Processing of Concepts” as Inspiration for Developing a (Meta)Language of Pedagogy

Abstract

The article addresses the issue of constructing a contemporary (meta)language of pedagogy in the context of Johann Friedrich Herbart’s historical concept, referred to as the “processing of concepts” (Bearbeitung der Begriffe). This concept represents an analytical-synthetic procedure in which, through the identification and resolution of contradictions within everyday notions, a coherent and precise scientific (meta)language is formed. To illustrate this concept, Herbart’s notion of governing children (Regierung der Kinder) is discussed. The processing of concepts makes it possible to overcome the negative connotations associated with the expression “governing children” and to grasp its deeper pedagogical meaning. The author also points to four difficulties that hinder the implementation of the processing of concepts within contemporary Polish pedagogical discourse.
