Professional Development in Care and Educational Work With Young Children: Toward Reflective Practice and New Approaches

Abstract

The article focuses on professional development in care and educational work with young children and on exploring new approaches in this field through an in-depth analysis of reflective practice and high-quality professional improvement. It highlights the relatively small numer of empirical studies examining the relationship between teachers’ thinking and reflection and their pedagogical interactions with young children in the context of early education and care. The article discusses in detail the four criteria of reflection defined by Carol Rodgers, based on the works of John Dewey. It emphasizes the importance of high-quality professional development consistent with a constructivist approach, which genuinely contributes to improving care and education. The article also points to the growing number of children participating in early education and care in Poland, while noting the challenges related to daily child observation – a factor that calls for the development of effective observational tools and support for practitioners.
