Jan Patočka’s Idea of the Spiritual Human Being as an Inspiration for Educational Theory and Practice

Abstract

The aim of this article is to reconstruct the idea of the “spiritual man” as conceived by Czech philosopher Jan Patočka (1907–1977) and highlight its implications for educational theory and practice. Referring to the theme of the 12th National Pedagogical Congress, which was humanity as a problem of pedagogy and an educational task, I explain my understanding of humanity in the text, derived from phenomenological thought, mainly that of Roman Ingarden. I characterise the situation of man in the world, referring to Patočka’s surprisingly relevant diagnoses. I then reconstruct his reflections about the spiritual human being, drawing attention to the care for the soul as a self-controlling, self-unifying practice of thought and life, and to the communal engagement of the spiritual human being. Finally, I relate Patočka’s idea to education, treating it as a theoretical basis that inspires the creation of one’s own pedagogical activity. I use qualitative analysis of the subject literature.
