Writing as a Value in the Discursive Community of Philomaths

Abstract

The aim of the article is to present the value of writing activity by members of the discursive community of the Philomath Society based on their correspondence. The Philomath Society is a model discursive community, i.e. a community of people associated with a specific, institutionalized activity, anchored in discourse. The activity of the discourse community is connected with the axiological sphere. Based on the correspondence of members of the Philomath Society, it is possible to indicate the values appreciated by the community. One of these values is writing. The importance of writing is indicated by high frequency of use of the verb to write in various forms. This verb appears primarily in the metatextual elements of the letter. Highly valued writing also refers to the literary and practical work of community members. Writing dissertations and essays for Society meetings has a certain degree of negative connotations. Based on the analysis of the collected material, it can be concluded that writing constitutes the discursive community of Philomaths: writing letters, poems and dissertations is an obligation of the Philomath Society.
