Fascicle 8: Corpus Linguistics and Translation Studies

Theme: Denominative variants, terminological variation and referent identity

The forthcoming issue of Roczniki Humanistyczne, Volume 72 (2024), Fascicle 8 Corpus Linguistics and Translation Studies, aims to explore the problem of naming, which continues to be relevant in linguistic research and is currently experiencing a major boom, particularly as a result of the work of terminologists and translators. New methods of linguistic analysis, the availability of corpora and text analysis software, and neural machine translation are giving rise to new questions about denominative variants (depending on the conceptual, lexical and syntactic level) and variations in terminology (depending on the type of specialised text).

We expect contributions that highlight the link between linguistic units and the identity of the named referent either as a real or conceptual entity, but one which has its own internal and external coherence. The questions may concern the following: ontological (conceptual) variants as a support for lexical variants; metaphorical or metonymic naming as a synonym for an already existing one; the translator and the choice of a denominative variant resulting from the choice of translation strategies; terminological variation and types of specialised texts from the perspective of translation.

Several areas of referent can be studied, including, but not limited to, biology and the identity of species of fauna and flora; people (as an individual or as a community) and the question of identity; spirituality (supernatural dimensions) and religious identity; art and culture (artistic dimensions) and the coherence of works of art, law and the identity of legal entities.

Preferred languages: French, Spanish, Italian.
