Multimedia as a Support for Catechesis: Opportunities and Challenges

Marian Zając

Abstract

The analysis presented in this article unequivocally confirms that multimedia must be incorporated into catechesis. This necessity arises from the transformation of contemporary educational processes, which have shifted from passive relationships between teachers and learners to new dynamics of mutual interaction. This transformation enables catechesis to fulfil its educational objectives more effectively. The analysis and interpretation of relevant directives contained in selected Church documents and theological publications on multimedia were employed to elucidate the issues outlined in the title. Conclusions and recommendations were formulated using the synthesis method. The key findings highlight that the transmission of catechetical content and potential Christian formation must take place in an environment that aligns with the realities of contemporary learners, which is inherently multimedia-driven. Building strong support for multimedia-assisted catechesis should begin with demonstrating its educational potential, followed by preparing catechists to use multimedia tools effectively. The multimedia applications proposed in this article are well-suited to current socio-cultural transformations, particularly the increasing indifference toward catechesis. The topic addressed in this study is original and aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion on the development of a cultural catechesis concept in a secularised Polish society.
