Representation of the Human Figure and its Specificity in Drawings by Blind Children and Youth

Abstract

The drawing of the human figure is a topic explored by researchers studying the visual development of children and youth. This issue is relatively understudied in the case of drawings by blind individuals. This publication aims to delve into the mentioned problem by presenting a typology of the form of the human figure in drawings by individuals who have been blind from birth, as well as attempting to answer the question of whether the works of blind students present a similar model of creating the phenomenon as drawings by sighted individuals. The research method will consist of analyzing artistic creations – drawings by blind individuals. To obtain knowledge about the phenomenon created in the drawings, interviews were conducted with the subjects, and participatory observation of the creative act was also applied. The subject of the research is convex drawings created using a “raised line” technique, perceptible to touch. The analyses will be conducted in relation to the typology of the form of the human figure in the artistic creation of sighted individuals, developed based on the research and classification of Bolesław Hornowski, Stanisław Popek, Stefan Szuman and Marta Uberman.
