The Sense of Loneliness and Coping Styles of Future Teachers

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationship between the sense of loneliness and coping styles of future teachers. The study involved 310 people aged between 18 and 29. A diagnostic survey method was used involving the following research tools: the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations and the Revised Loneliness Scale R ‒ UCLA. The analysis of data regarding the sense of loneliness revealed that the mean total score among the respondents was M = 40.6. The sense of loneliness, both in the overall dimension and the individual subscales, revolved around the mean values. With regard to the analysis of data on coping styles, the results were distributed evenly across the scales. The emotion-oriented coping style was the style most preferred by the respondents, as confirmed by the high scores obtained by 60% of the respondents in this aspect. This was followed by the avoidance coping style (38.4%), and the task-oriented coping style (30%). The conducted analyses revealed a statistically significant relationship between the sense of loneliness and coping styles among the respondents.
