Abstract

A spinal cord injury is one of the most difficult experiences in a person's life completely changing the trajectory of life so far. The consequences of living with a disability resulting from a spinal injury affect not only the patients but also the immediate environment. The biopsychosocial framework of rehabilitation emphasises the simultaneous interaction of contextual factors on the functioning of a person with an acquired physical disability. The aim of the present article is to characterise selected contextual factors that are important in determining the sense of quality of life of people with spinal cord injury. Research reports indicate wide variation and inconclusive results in the determinants of the sense of quality of life of people with spinal cord injury. This is due to both the problems of operationalising the phenomenon of sense of quality of life itself and the internal variation of the group analysed.
