Personal Factors of the Child and the Close Family and Early Childhood Development Support – Dilemmas, Challenges, Opportunities

Abstract

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF, ICF-CY), based on a biopsychosocial approach, contributes to a holistic understanding of child functioning and related factors. Personal factors are currently not classified in the ICF and the ICF-CY due to the wide social and cultural variation and lack of clarity about their scope. The literature shows that self-efficacy, attitudes, expectations, motivation, personality traits and life goals are most commonly included among them. Personal factors are considered to influence disability and health and play an important role in assessing functioning and rehabilitation. In the case of early intervention – due to the specificity of the developmental period – it seems necessary to take into account the personal factors of both the child and his/her immediate family. The paper gives an overview of research and approaches related to personal factors in the context of the ICF / ICF-CY and early support of child development.
