Pregorexia – its Consequences for the Health of Offspring and Future Generations

Abstract

Socio-cultural pressures regarding women’s appearance and the assessment of their attractiveness equated with a slim figure are increasing the number of these women who try to maintain their pre-pregnancy body appearance for as long as possible after conceiving a child, engaging in many of the behaviors that are characteristic of anorexia in pregnancy known as pregorexia. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on pregorexia as an eating disorder in pregnant women (some of whom have had previous problems with anorexia) from the perspective of its extensive consequences for maternal and child health. Research supports one general conclusion, that a woman’s inadequate nutrition and weight deficiency just before pregnancy and during pregnancy has a negative impact on the procreative process and the lifetime health of the child and the health of future generations. There is an urgent need not only for research on pregorexia, but also for the development of interdisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic services towards at-risk groups, as well as for public health education regarding proper nutrition for women during the procreative period.
