Child with Auditory Processing Disorder in an Interdisciplinary Approach – A Case Study

Abstract

Auditory processing disorder (APD) is an interdisciplinary problem, the solution of which should be sought by a team of specialists/therapists (speech therapist, pedagogue, psychologist). The aim of the case study is to observe the diagnostic process of a 9-year-old boy with symptoms of auditory processing disorder, risk of dyslexia, and with school difficulties and his family environment (mother). The child underwent audiological diagnostics, tests of higher auditory functions: Dichotic Digit Test, Frequency Pattern Test, and the Duration Pattern Test, speech therapy evaluation (Comprehensive speech therapy examination), pedagogical assessment (Children’s Auditory Performance Scale,  Risk of Dyslexia Scale), and psychological assessment (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire). To assess psychological functioning of the mother the following questionnaires were used: global self-perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale), maternal burnout (Parental Burnout Assessment), family relations (Flexibility and Cohesion Evaluation Scales). The boy’s interdisciplinary diagnosis indicated the need to start with auditory training, compensatory exercises and social competence training. However, in the case of the boy’s mother, in-depth psychological diagnosis is recommended in order to offer her an appropriate form of psychological intervention.
