A Memento Watch and Its Literary Renditions

Abstract

The subject of this article is a memento watch considered in the context of studies on memory, emotion and communication, based on selected literary examples. In keepsakes such as watches we recognise objects that, like all commemorative things, prop up our memory and serve to prevent transitoriness with a kind of immutability. In other words, every memento records the passage of time, making it appear not definitive. However, the uniqueness of a watch lies in the fact that, as a neutral technical device, it demonstrates the essential inevitability of what, as a souvenir, it seeks to counteract – indicating the futility of such efforts.
