Syntactic Errors Made by Polish Students Learning Ukrainian

Abstract

The article analyzes the syntactic errors occurring in Ukrainian simple and complex sentences in the speech of Polish-language students-Ukrainists (spotted by the author in students’ written works). It also looks at the ways how such mistakes can be eliminated so that Ukrainian syntactic norms can be mastered. The most common syntactic differences in both languages are taken into account, including word order in sentences, subject-verb agreement, the use of modifiers and the words they modify, participial modifiers, the syntax of Ukrainian numerals, nominal and adjectival government, prepositional phrases, placement of the relative pronoun який in subordinate relative clauses, passive constructions, syntactic calques, etc. These errors frequently lead to miscomprehension of written messages or may affect the understanding of spoken utterances. Such errors (100 examples of various syntactic errors are presented) result from interlingual interference; however, there are also language mistakes that come from native speakers. It is argued that the effectiveness of overcoming such errors depends on the quality of special written and verbal tasks, aimed at highlighting syntactical differences between the two languages (translation, correction of syntactic errors, written assignments). The use of comparative methods, making activities at an appropriate level will prevent any syntactic errors in oral and written speech of foreign students.
