Neo-Gothic Architecture in the Lublin Region: A Supplement

Abstract

Between 1988 and 1992, the author of this article conducted research on Neo-Gothic architecture in the Lublin region. As a result, he identified 120 Neo-Gothic buildings located in 89 towns and villages. They were discussed in his doctoral thesis entitled ‘Neo-Gothic Architecture in the Lublin Region’, defended in 1994 at the Catholic University of Lublin and published in book form in 1998. The opportunities that subsequent years brought to researchers, especially those related to the use of the Internet, revealed the existence of objects that had not been noted in earlier studies. They are presented in this article. There are twenty-five of them, including six temples, four cemetery chapels, thirteen roadside shrines and two secular buildings. Of these, only two buildings (the churches in Stoczek Łukowski and Wola Osowińska) are examples of larger architectural projects, Gothicised both externally and internally, whilst also drawing on medieval building structures. References to the Gothic style in other buildings are limited to their external appearance and are expressed through the use of a very narrow repertoire of forms.
