On Professor Tadeusz Chrzanowski, Heroes of the Past, and the First Icon in the Inventory of the National Museum in Krakow

Abstract

Professor Tadeusz Chrzanowski (1926–2006) was one of the most distinctive and recognisable Polish art historians. In this article, I have included personal memories and experiences gained from the classes taught by the Professor at the Institute of Art History at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), which I attended in the early 1990s, highlighting the influence of his attitude and views on my academic development and subsequent path in life. I have sought to demonstrate that his activities and achievements can be seen as part of a long tradition of pro-educational and pro-social attitudes, characterised by a focus on promoting the common good and rooted in the principles of 19th-century positivism.
