Amber Diplomatic Gifts in Western Europe – the Throne of Leopold I

Abstract

Amber in the 17th century was an extremely important and unique material used for creating works of art. Items made from this material were highly sought after, especially in the territories of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and East Prussia. The greatest admirer of this resource was Frederick William, the Great Elector, who often chose amber creations as diplomatic gifts sent to the courts of other rulers, including the Tsardom of Muscovy. Every item that became a gift was not chosen randomly. Carefully considered in terms of details, decorations, and, most importantly, the selection of the object tailored to the recipient, it held great significance. Such items were given on occasions such as coronations or their anniversaries, as was the case with the amber throne for Emperor Leopold I of the Holy Roman Empire.
