The Activity of the Organ Building Company Berschdorf in the Kłodzko Region During the Years 1926-1942

Abstract

The article is devoted to the activities of the Nysa-based Berschdorf company in the former county of Kłodzko. The organ building workshop was active in this area during the years 1926-1942. Four new instruments were built there (after 1928: Kłodzko – Chapel of the Catholic grammar school; 1935: Międzygórze – Sanctuary of St Mary of the Snow; 1938: Wambierzyce – basilica; 1939: Duszniki-Zdrój – parish church) and two other instruments were rebuilt (1938: Lądek-Zdrój – spa chapel; 1940: Ponikwa – parish church). The company also carried out at least nine general renovations. Particular attention should be paid to the organ in the basilica of Wambierzyce. The instrument is one of the largest organs in the Kłodzko region. Mention should also be made of the organ in the former grammar school chapel in Kłodzko, where the rarely found dual duplexing system is used. All the newly built instruments by Berschdorf used pneumatic action and were equipped, apart from the organ in the Kłodzko grammar school, with membrane chests. The majority of the projected dispositions owe much to the sound esthetics of the Orgelbewegung, particularly noticeable in the parish organ of Duszniki-Zdrój as well as in the basilica of Wambierzyce.
