Innovative Educational Project “Warsaw Addresses of Russian Emigrants”: Case Study

Abstract

The considerations undertaken in this article concern the issue of teaching foreign literature of a selected cultural area and discuss the role of projects as a universal method in teaching foreign languages. The effectiveness of the interactive work methods model in philological education will be presented on the selected example of the author's educational and translation project “Warsaw addresses of Russian emigrants”. The project aimed to familiarize students with selected aspects of Polish-Russian literary relations in the interwar period and the emigration work of outstanding cultural creators. The essence of the project was to develop a series of thirty postcards presenting the places of residence of Russian emigrants, the so-called “first wave” in Warsaw (1920–1940) with a bilingual description. An important assumption of the implemented project was teaching through various forms of activities, and the means – getting to know ego-documents, allowing to explain “blank spots” of history, understand the sources and contexts of real events and discover new facts in historical research of literature. The project fulfilled an important social role, as it was aimed at restoring historical memory in the contemporary space of the city. The actions taken created the opportunity to acquire knowledge in many fields: history, literature, language and art. The evaluation of the project allows to state the increase in students’ awareness of the role of culture, cultural heritage in learning foreign languages, as well as inspiration for activities aimed at learning about the history of Polish-Russian cultural and literary contacts.
