Abstract

In a context where the transmission of technical knowledge remains largely obstructed by the preponderance of European languages in Africa, this article examines the decisive role of translation in facilitating exchanges between agricultural agents and local farmers. Using the Yambeta language as an example, the article shows how the development of a specialised lexicon and the translation of agricultural technical data sheets have encouraged the appropriation of agronomic knowledge by speakers of this language. The study led to the development of a suitable agricultural terminology and phraseology to meet the challenges posed by the lack of corresponding technical concepts in Yambeta. The lexical enrichment mechanisms and translation strategies used made this knowledge accessible while respecting the linguistic and cultural specificities of the Yambeta community. The results reveal a significant improvement in the understanding of farming practices, which in turn encourages better adoption of innovations. Beyond this case study, the article argues for a more inclusive language policy, targeting the institutional recognition of translation as a strategic lever for sustainable development and the empowerment of rural communities in Africa.
