Korean Agriculture and Agricultural Terminology in the Time of St. John Yi Yun-Il (1823–1867)

Abstract

On May 6, 1984, in Seoul, John Paul II canonized 103 Korean martyrs. Among them was John Yi Yun-Il (1823–1867), the first saint farmer to be canonized after the Second Vatican Council. The first part of the paper provides an introduction to the major issues of the Korean language, takes a look at the unique circumstances of the spread of the Catholic faith on Korean soil, and presents the life and family of St. John in this context. It is argued that certain requirements of the new religion conflicted with the principles of Confucianism, which had a decisive impact on the life, choices, activities, family and martyrdom of John Yi Yun-il.

The second part of the paper characterizes agricultural techniques in the late Joseon period. The cultivation of rice in paddy fields, together with the cultivation of various cereals in dry fields, formed the dominant part of agriculture at that time. Selected methods of crop cultivation, tools used in planting, tending and harvesting crops, and animal breeding in the provinces inhabited by John Yi Yun-il form the core of this section.
