The Protagonists and the Outsiders of Contemporary Polish Aesthetics

Abstract

The primary purpose of the article is an attempt to situate Polish aesthetics against the background of contemporary challenges. The paper recalls the innovative nature of the problems undertaken by the aestheticians of the interbellum and attempts to address the possibility of their application to contemporary research. The study is historical and analytical in nature, recognizes the particularities of the Polish road to modernity and analyzes its conditions and their impact on the reception of aesthetical theories. The leading concept characterizing the process of reception is presented in the form of the category of horizon, inspired by its use in hermeneutics, but with a critical distance and considering the circumstances of the emergence of cognitive obstacles to the impact of theories. The singularity of the object of study, represented by the concepts devoted to art, which variously define the philosophical nature of aesthetics, is emphasized. Exemplary material is provided by theories that are substantively diverse and have varying scopes of influence, with a particular focus on lesser-known concepts. A similar criterion was applied in the selection of research paths and problems that could inspire contemporary aestheticians. The conclusion emphasizes the ambivalence of the position of the protagonist and the outsider in aesthetics as a discipline with a heterogeneous object of study.
