Jan Matejko’s Polonia. Psalms of the Future by Z. Krasiński: Semantic Issues

Abstract

Polonia. Psalms of the Future by Z. Krasiński is the only allegorical painting by Jan Matejko inspired by Psalms of the Future written by Zygmunt Krasiński. The Polish romantic poet conjures up a mystic vision of the peaceful path to independence for compatriots deprived of hope for their mother country’s political independence. This is the way of mystic, spiritual revival based on the Gospel’s message of love that will allow to improve of fate of all Polish, also social strata lacking political and social rights. This way can become an indication for spiritual revival of other European nations. This vision should prevent fratricidal fights that the poet wanted to avoid, that—unfortunately – happened during Galician Peasant Uprising of 1846. Matejko illustrated the essence of Krasiński’s model—a moment of flying high, to God to Mother of God Queen of Poland, surrounded by angels and human souls. By the feet of Mary is Polonia (Poland), buried but ready to revive, and a white eagle—the national emblem of Poland.
