The Oldest History of Saint Maurice’s Church in Zawichost

Abstract

The text focuses on past and present viewpoints on the date of the creation of the church dedicated to St Maurice in Zawichost. It presents the belief, currently dominant among some researchers (primarily archaeologists), that this church was a Romanesque building (tetraconch), the relics of which were discovered several decades ago. This conviction, together with the dating of the building’s construction as adopted by archaeologists, affects the way of looking at the development of Zawichost’s ecclesiastical centre. The article attempts to confront today’s views with what is included in written sources and outlines a real vision of the oldest history of Saint Maurice’s Church in Zawichost.
