The Influence of L1 and L2 on the Acquisition of Noun Gender in L3

Raúl Fernández Jódar

Abstract

In the last two decades, a series of models and hypotheses have been proposed to determine how previously acquired languages influence the process of acquiring L3. In some of these hypotheses, the order and context of acquiring the previous languages play an important role, suggesting that L2 would be the only possible source of influence in the process of acquiring L3. On the other hand, other models assign a predominant role to the proximity between languages. In some of these models, it is considered that the previous languages can only have a positive or neutral impact, while in others, the possibility of negative influence is not excluded. In the present study, our focus is on examining the gender of transparent and opaque nouns in the acquisition of Catalan as L3 by Polish university students with Spanish as L2. The paper seeks to elucidate whether the L2 is the sole potential source of influence in the process of acquiring gender in the L3, or if the L1 also exerts an influence.
