The Green Bias of the Bilingual Student: A Side Note to Creative Writing

Abstract

Bi-, or rather multilingualism of the modern world is getting increasingly common. This article was inspired by the experimental classes conducted as part of the course in International Polish Studies, attended by students from Poland and foreigners with an East Slavic language as the mother tongue. In the case of the Polish spoken by the surveyed foreigners they present late bilingualism – they acquired the language in early adulthood and it often has a subordinate character. Literary texts serve the purpose of better exploring and understanding the language and also, essentially, the cultural legacy. The article explains the method of analysis and creative imitation on the example of “Biology Teacher” by Zbigniew Herbert. The theme and poetics of the poem encourages the creation of own texts. The emphasised context here is the environmental humanities. Texts based on the poetic pattern can be treated as an example of, importantly for the young generation, a turn to the Earth, which is a characteristic reflection on not only the past, but also the future.
