Personal Experience, Testimony of Memory, and Possible Interpretations of Reality: A Press Interview From the Perspective of Slavic Translation Studies

Abstract

An individual viewpoint, the way of presenting events as well as documentary authenticity determine the autobiographical character of texts, including press interviews, placing this journalistic genre within the forms of non-fiction personal documentation. The author proposes an interpretation from the perspective of Slavic translation studies, which involves comparing the original and its translation (targeted at different recipients) functioning within various communication spaces and different social, political, and cultural conditions. The material basis consists of a corpus of Russian-language interviews with representatives of Russian culture and science, along with their Polish translations published in the journal “Forum” from 2022 to 2023. The interviewees confront issues regarding Russia’s military actions, attitudes of Russian society, memory of the past, and forecasts for the future. The focus remains on modifications related to the formal structuring of statements and the construction of the text in terms of its substantive content. This is due to the necessity of making reduction in the translation of media texts, their functioning without reference to the original, and consideration of anticipated interpretations by the Polish recipient.
