The Bohemian Love Affair of Marina Tsvetaeva and Konstantin Rodzievich in the Light of Personal Documents and Memoir Narratives

Abstract

The aim of this article is to reconstruct the romance between Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva and the Pole Konstantin Rodzievich in the light of selected personal documents and memoir narratives. The analysis includes the content of Tsvetaeva’s letters to her lover and to her friends, her personal notes, as well as records of conversations with Rodzievich, the memoirs of her friends, her sister Anastasiya, the poet’s daughter Ariadne Efron and the correspondence of her husband Sergei Efron. The research inquiry focuses on revealing the chronology and phases in the development of Tsvetaeva and Rodzievich’s intimate relationship, from the romantic beginning to the separation. The analysis allows us to grasp the dynamics of the love relationship, above all its impact on the lives of the lovers and their loved ones, and its influence on the poet's work.
