Abstract

The article presents the program of Jewish music concerts broadcast by prewar Polish Radio. From a Galician perspective, it examines the presence of Jewish music and Jewish musicians on the airwaves in the cities of Lvov and Krakow, reviewing both concerts organized by local Jewish music circles as well as musical events aired from Warsaw and Vilnius. By comparing these programs, the article explores the cultural policies of the organizers representing different regions of Poland. Drawing on press accounts and memoir literature, the author also sketches a picture of the transformation of Jewish musical culture during its encounter with new technology, citing the reflections of Jewish critics and publicists on changes occurring in the broader music scene as a result of radio broadcasts. The article raises questions on social interactions, the factors shaping the new Jewish national culture, and the relationships between Polish and Jewish circles that developed through their shared presence on the radio.
