Transcending Boundaries in Voorspel van een gebroken liefde [Prelude to a Broken Love] by Geert de Kockere and Isabelle Vandenabeele, as an Ekphrasis of the Painting Prologue d’un amour brisé by Edgard Tytgat

Abstract

Voorspel van een gebroken liefde [Prelude to a broken love] is a Flemish picturebook by Geert De Kockere (text) and Isabelle Vandenabeele (illustrations), published in 2007. The back cover of the book includes the painting “Prologue d’un amour brisé” by the Belgian expressionist Edgard Tytgat (1879-1957). The picture was painted in 1928 and it remains a mystery which has not yet been explained, even by experts on Tytgat’s art. This picturebook is an attempt to interpret the painting. The article examines the picturebook as ekphrasis, a creative answer to Tytgat’s painting. Finally, the findings are interpreted in the broader context of picturebooks for adults and “for all ages”. As a theoretical framework, I use research on different types of ekphrasis and Sandra Beckett’s Crossover Picturebooks: A Genre for All Ages (2012) to examine various cross-over issues arising from features of the genre, especially the relationships between text and pictures.
