Theology in the Face of the Claims of Technology

Abstract

For theology, the new locus theologicus alieni seems to be increasingly modern technology and related technological progress. A certain “omnipresence” of technology in human life influences the creation of “the technical worldview” (Pope Benedict XVI) and “the technocratic paradigm” (Pope Francis), which point to some of its specific claims regarding the interpretation of reality or understanding of man. The author attempts to classify these claims and respond to them in the light of the thought of the last three popes, who referred with varying intensity to issues related to the development of technology. In the course of the conducted analyses, he first presents claims inspired by technological progress; then the reasons for its ambivalent assessment, and finally provides answers to the claims made from the perspective of Christian theology of creation and anthropology.
