An Attempt to Show the Rise and Early Formation of the Hierarchy of the Lower Clergy in the Church between the 2nd and 3rd Centuries

Abstract

The present publication is an attempt to show the process of formation of the lower hierarchy of the clergy, which at that time included five levels: ostrich, lector, exrocyst, acolyte and subdeacon. These degrees existed in the Church between the 2nd and 3th centuries as auxiliary offices to the holy ordres (diaconate, presbyterate and bishopric). This period is also the historical time when the lower ministries were not clericalized. It is to this end that the focus of this work is particulary focused on this period.
