The Role of Basic Educational Environments in the Patriotic Education of Children and Youth

Abstract

Patriotic education of children and youth is becoming a priority task. It should be done in a harmonious cooperation of three basic educational environments: family, school and parish. The first school of patriotism is the family which shapes the image of the homeland, the respect for national symbols, it celebrates national anniversaries and cultivates patriotic traditions. In the family, the young person develops the virtues necessary for the functioning of national ties, such as: faithfulness, diligence and hospitality. A great role in the patriotic upbringing of children and youth is also played by the school. The national identity is shaped in particular by subjects, such as: Polish, history and civics. An important role is played by reading literary works and knowledge of the most important national songs that are part of the Polish cultural heritage. A special role in transmitting patriotic content, awakening the national spirit and loving the homeland is fulfilled by catechetical teaching and pastoral activity of the parish. The sense of patriotism, the bond with the nation and the love of the homeland can still be successfully introduced into the spiritual world of children and youth, despite globalization, the culture of hedonism and materialism. It is also worth emphasizing that the essence of patriotism in the present times is expressed in honest, creative work, in the service of society and the homeland.
