Interdisciplinarity in Theological Research

Abstract

Interdisciplinarity in researching the complexity of reality is finding more and more supporters among scientists. Since the Second Vatican Council, theology has also been more open to cooperation with other sciences, not only with the human, but also with the various disciplines of empirical science. The interdisciplinary openness of theology raises a number of questions. Does a theologian should listen to the voices of proponents of other sciences when their research disciplines have little or no interest in them? Does theology have something to say to the other sciences in interdisciplinary dialogue? Can the interdisciplinary profile of theology help to create an integral concept of man and the world? Can interdisciplinary research in theology contribute to the transmission of faith in a scientifically shaped worldview? The author gives a positive answer to the questions posed, arguing for the need to take into account interdisciplinarity in theological reflection. As justification, he gives three reasons resulting from the conducted analyses: firstly, interdisciplinarity in theological research as a way out of the one-dimensional scientific paradigm; secondly, interdisciplinarity as a possibility of a holistic view of nature and man; thirdly, interdisciplinarity as a new mode of faith accountability in a worldview shaped by natural science.
