Exploration of the Biographical Data of the Organ Builder Carl Volkmann

Abstract

This article describes the research process on the biography of Carl Volkmann, a highly regarded 19th-century Upper Silesian organ builder, who worked in Gliwice and built instruments in the most distinguished churches in the industrial part of Upper Silesia. He built organs in both Catholic and Protestant churches. Until now, it was believed that he came from Silesia, most likely Gliwice. However, the research clearly established that he was actually from Thuringia, Germany, which justifies the style of organ building he represented, in terms of construction and technology as well as sound.
