St Augustine’s Approach to the Nicene Homooúsios

Abstract

This article examines the approach of St Augustine, one of the most eminent thinkers of the Christian West at the turn of the fourth and fifth centuries, to the Greek homooúsios contained in the Nicene Creed. The research objective will be achieved through a comparative analysis of Augustine’s statements, their historical context, and a synthesis of the resulting conclusions. This approach will present the Christological part of the Nicene Creed as interpreted by Augustine, in connection with the Latin tradition. The article begins with a presentation of the Council of Nicaea in Augustine’s statements. It then moves on to a discussion of this early Christian thinker’s references to homooúsios. The final section of the article is devoted to Augustine’s own journey and his fidelity to the Latin tradition.
