The Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra: A Space of Ideas and Symbols in the Context of a Cultural Turning Point

Abstract

The aim of this article is to demonstrate the manner in which the majesty of the Spanish monarchy is conveyed through an analysis of the ideological content embodied in the Palace of Charles V within the Alhambra. This structure symbolises the transition from Islamic to European culture, situating itself within the context of the Italian Renaissance. It constitutes an exceptional work of the Spanish Renaissance, in which numerous references to the architectural tradition of the Italian Renaissance can be discerned. The rich iconographic programme implemented in this palace complex presents Charles V of the House of Habsburg as one of the most outstanding monarchs of early modern Europe, as well as an effective defender of Christianity against Islam.
