The article tracks down the intricate origins of Principios de fortificación, the most important eighteenth century Spanish treatise on fortifications published by Pedro de Lucuze in 1772. A detailed analysis reveals the role of the Marquess of La Mina, the leading commander of the Spanish Army, and his relations with the treatise author.
