For Breathlessness: Contemporary Contexts of an Eternal Question of Meaning in Birgit Birnbacher’s Novel Wovon wir leben

Abstract

Birgit Birnbacher’s novel Wovon wir leben deals with the crisis and dilemmas of the working class, focusing on the lives of women. The article discusses the presented in the novel worlds of labour and family in the form of a close reading case study pointing out the strategies with which the author describes them. The juxtaposition of paid labour and reproductive work refers to contemporary forms of work taking into account research concepts from perspectives of cultural studies. In this context, the article addresses the question of the meaning of existence immanent in the novel and the possibility of resolving the precarious work and family relationships in which people are often entangled in the twenty-first century.
