Between Dementia and Literature: Flavio Pagano and Marco Annicchiarico

Abstract

This article aims to analyse two autobiographical novels, Perdutamente (2013) by Flavio Pagano and I cura cari (2022) by Marco Annicchiarico, which recount life in the shadow of Alzheimer’s disease. Both books intertwine poetic elements with descriptions of the difficult daily reality, offering a poignant portrayal of the challenging life of a caregiver for a person suffering from dementia, made all the more difficult when the patient is one’s own mother, and when, to make matters worse, the public healthcare system fails to provide sufficient support. Nevertheless, both works are not merely reflections on human fragility but, above all, a celebration of love, empathy, and life in all its manifestations.
