Methodological Basis of the “Plebeian Turn”

Abstract

Over the last decade, dozens of works concerning the “plebeian turn” have been created in Poland. They verify traditional interpretations of the past. They describe the social history of Poland from a Marxist perspective and instrumentally bypass the process of cultural osmosis. They also downplay the importance of the emergence of Polish national culture based on the nobility ethos. Their goal is to reinterpret the past and give a voice to subordinated groups. Authors who follow the “plebeian turn” do not provide the results of the source analysis. They present an interpretation that is often simplified, polemical, and rooted in current political debates, which makes their works take on a journalistic nature.
